Salem Health and Wellness Fair set at KSU City Center | News, Sports, Jobs

SALEM — The city health district will host its first Salem Community Health and Wellness Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the KSU City Center, 230 N. Lincoln Ave., featuring health screenings, vendors, educational opportunities and activities for all ages.

“It’s going to be fun, lot of free raffles,” city Health Commissioner Alanna Stainbrook said.

The nursing division, led by Director of Nursing Kristin Toy, BSN, RN, has been organizing the event that’s meant to encourage visitors to take charge of their health and wellness. Increasing educational opportunities is something the nursing staff has been wanting to do post-COVID.

“We are really looking forward to having a big crowd,” Stainbrook said.

The free fair features 28 health and wellness vendors who will have tables set up, blood pressure and pulse oximetry screenings, BMI measurements, otoscopic exams and hearing screens, educational demonstrations and kids activities. COVID vaccines will be available and physicians will be on hand to answer general questions.

According to Stainbrook, a visit to a booth for education will earn the visitor a voucher for the free drawings. Some of the prizes include a 43-inch television, beach-themed basket, health and wellness basket and gift baskets or gift certificates or cards from various businesses. Even the parks department has thrown in a pool pass. She said a lot of Salem area businesses have donated items and contributed to the event.

“I’m very grateful for their support in this,” she said.

She was especially excited about the kids activities. Kids will be encouraged to be a Health Hero and can earn a certificate from the mayor. Weather permitting, there will be a bike rodeo for kids and a helmet giveaway for anyone who needs one. Education stations will include bike safety, healthy plate and exercise. Posters from high school students will be displayed.

There’s also going to be a Distracted Driving simulator.

The Salem Police Department and K-9 Simon and his handler Mike Garber are expected to attend, along with the Salem Fire Department with the new fire truck and new ambulance.

Food vendors offering food for purchase will include Chick-fil-A and Quaker Nutrition.
