Boots issues recall of 31 own-brand vitamins and health supplements over banned substance

Boots Ireland has recalled 31 of its own-brand vitamins and health care supplements due to the presence of a substance that could pose a risk if it is consumed over a long period of time.

he recall was posted today on the latest food alert from the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSA).

“The products contain a substance called 2-chloroethanol which is a recognised reaction product of ethylene oxide,” the FSAI said.

“Ethylene oxide is a pesticide that is not permitted for use in foods sold in the EU, but is approved for use by other countries outside the EU. Although the consumption of the contaminated product does not pose an acute risk to health, there is an increased risk if there is continued consumption of contaminated food over a long period of time. Therefore, exposure to this substance needs to be minimised.”

All of the affected products were made in the UK.

In a statement this evening, Boots Ireland said: “The safety of our customers is of upmost importance to us. As a precautionary measure, we have made the decision to recall a small number of batches of selected Boots vitamins and supplements from our stores in Ireland. Consumption of the affected products does not pose an acute risk to health.

“If customers have purchased any of the listed items, and they carry a best before end date prior to or equal to August 2023 we ask that you stop taking them and they are returned to any Boots store for a full refund. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and if customers do have any further queries, our Customer Care Team can be contacted on 1800 719824.”

Among the affected products are popular multivitamins as well as vitamins B, C, D, zinc and iron as well as vegan formula multivitamins and multivitamins for children.

Other affected healthcare supplements include those used during pregnancy and breastfeeding, supplements to boost immune health, joint and conception as well as products for both men and women over the age of 50. All of the affected products have a Best Before Date of August, 2023.
